Most families coming to their first santa session have the same question running through their heads: how is this actually going to go? Will the kids cooperate? What if someone cries? How long does the whole thing take?
I hear some version of this from almost every family who books, and I always give them the same answer: it’s shorter, simpler, and more fun than you’re expecting. And knowing what to expect before you arrive makes the whole experience so much more relaxed, especially for the kids.
Last year, I was genuinely amazed at how smoothly our Santa Experience sessions went. Out of an entire day of families, only two little ones shed any tears, and honestly? Even those photos were adorable. That’s the thing about kids and Santa. The moments you can’t plan are often the ones you’ll love most.
Here’s everything you need to know before you walk through the door.

A santa mini session is a short, focused portrait session where your family gets professional photos with Santa in a beautifully styled set. It is not a mall Santa photo. It is not a quick snapshot in a line. It is a real photography experience, just condensed into a format that actually works for young children.
The difference is significant. At a mall Santa, you are waiting in a long line, your kids are overstimulated before they even get there, and you end up with a single stiff photo taken by someone who has never met your family. A santa mini session with a professional photographer is an entirely different experience. The set is intentional, the lighting is beautiful, and someone who genuinely loves working with kids is behind the camera the whole time.
My Santa Experience sessions are designed around what actually works for families with young children: a short, intentional block of time with a real Santa, a gorgeous set, and a photographer who knows how to get the best out of even the most camera-shy kids. You walk in, you enjoy the experience, and you walk out with images worth framing.

Each session is 15 minutes long. That might sound short, but it is intentional, and here is why it works.
Young children have a very specific attention window. Keep a session tight and focused, and most kids stay engaged, curious, and cooperative for the whole thing. Stretch it too long and you lose them. Fifteen minutes is the sweet spot where everything tends to come together.
I have seen families with three kids, all different ages, get individual images with Santa plus group shots and even some silly ones, all within that 15-minute window. When the session flows well and kids feel at ease, a lot can happen in a short amount of time.
If a child needs a moment to warm up, we work with that. The goal is never to rush anyone. But more often than not, families are surprised by how much we are able to capture before the session is even over.

Keep it simple. Here is what actually helps:
Outfits prepped and ready before you arrive. Do not leave this for the morning of. Lay everything out the night before, confirm everyone has what they need, and pack a backup outfit for your youngest. Spills happen. It is always the youngest.
A comfort item if your child has one. A small stuffed animal, a favorite toy, something familiar can make a big difference in those first few minutes when everything is new. (More on how we use these in a moment.)
A snack if that helps your child settle, especially if the session falls close to a meal or nap time. A well-fed, not-exhausted toddler is a different experience from a hungry one.
What not to bring: anything that adds logistics or stress to an already short window. Leave the bulky diaper bag in the car if you can. You will not need most of it. The lighter and simpler your arrival feels, the better the start of your session will be.

When your family arrives to the studio, around 10 minutes before your session start time, we take a few minutes to let the kids acclimate before anything starts. This is not wasted time. This is the part that makes everything else go smoothly.
I always start sessions with the whole family together. Having mom and dad right there with Santa for the first few minutes takes all the pressure off the kids. It becomes a family moment, not a kid-facing-a-stranger moment. Once everyone is relaxed and having fun, usually after about five to ten minutes, I transition to some images of just the kids with Santa. By that point they are warmed up, comfortable, and often already laughing.
Here is something most parents do not expect: the best images from a santa mini session almost never come from a child smiling on cue. They come from genuine reactions. The look of wonder. The moment a child reaches out to touch Santa’s hand. The giggle that happened when no one was watching. If you are calling your child’s name or coaching them to smile from across the room, you are unintentionally pulling their attention away from those moments. The best thing you can do is let go of the performance and just be present.

Santa fear is completely normal, and it does not mean your session is a failure. It just means we pivot.
When a child is nervous or reluctant to get close to Santa, I have a few go-to approaches that work really well. Sometimes I have them hold a stuffed animal or some blocks so their hands and attention are occupied and the pressure is off. Sometimes I ask Santa to read to them, which is something our Santa Greg genuinely loves to do. Sometimes I bring the parents back in and we get more images of the whole family together. And one that works almost every time: the rocking horse. Kids who want nothing to do with Santa will happily climb onto a rocking horse, and suddenly they forget to be scared.
Scared-of-Santa photos have also become genuinely beloved in their own right. The cry face, the wide eyes, the full-on refusal to make eye contact, these photos make people laugh every single year. Some families frame them or use them for their Christmas card. I am not kidding.
The point is that there is no bad outcome here. We will find what works for your child and make something beautiful with it either way.

You will receive a minimum of 15 images, with more available depending on your selected package. All images are professionally edited and delivered in a private online gallery.
Your gallery will be ready within 15 to 21 days of your session date. For most families booking in the fall, that timing lines up perfectly with Christmas card ordering deadlines. You will have your images in hand before you need them.
For full details on what is included in each package, visit the Santa Experience page.

When you book a spot in the Santa Experience, you will receive confirmation along with everything you need to know before your session, including what to wear, how to prepare your kids, and what to expect when you arrive.
Our Santa is Santa Greg, and he is truly one of a kind. He has a background in Broadway and years of experience working with children of all ages. He has a real white beard. He loves to read to kids, talk to them, and meet them exactly where they are. Families who have experienced him before specifically come back for him.
Sessions take place in my studio in Dallas, TX, in a beautiful Christmas-themed set. There are only 12 spots available, offered on one date only. Once they are gone, they are gone until next year.
Spots open July 15th and typically book up within the week. If this is on your radar, do not wait.

Santa mini sessions are faster, simpler, and more beautiful than most first-time families expect. Fifteen minutes, a real Santa, a gorgeous set, and a photographer who has been working with kids her entire career. That is what you are getting when you book the Santa Experience.
The images you walk away with will not sit in a folder on your phone. They will be on your walls, in your cards, in the hands of people you love. That is what this is for.
If you have a question before you book, reach out anytime!

Each session is 15 minutes long. That window is intentional because young children stay engaged and cooperative in a short, focused format. Most families are surprised by how much we capture in that time.
Classic Christmas colors and coordinating outfits photograph beautifully. Avoid (too) busy patterns or logos. Lay everything out the night before and pack a backup outfit for your youngest just in case.
You will receive a minimum of 15 professionally edited images. Additional images are available depending on your selected package. Visit the Santa Experience page for full package details. [link]
That is completely normal, and we have a plan. I use comfort items, storytelling, the rocking horse, and other gentle techniques to help nervous kids warm up. If they do not, we pivot to family images and capture something beautiful either way.
Your gallery will be delivered within 15 to 21 days of your session date, which for most fall sessions means your images will be ready well before Christmas card ordering deadlines.
Spots open July 15th and are limited to 12 families on one date only. If you have questions first, reach out and I am happy to help.
