If there is one time of year my inbox lights up faster than any other, it is mid to late summer. Families all over the Dallas area are suddenly thinking about Dallas fall family sessions, holiday cards, and getting everyone in one place before the year wraps up. And honestly? I love that energy. Fall is one of my absolute favorite seasons to photograph in North Texas.
But fall in Dallas comes with its own set of realities, and the more you know going in, the smoother your experience will be. So let me walk you through everything: when to book, what the light looks like, how backup dates work, what to wear, and a few tips to make your session feel relaxed and fun for the whole family.

This is the question everyone asks, and the honest answer is: later than you think.
Dallas is firmly in Texas, which means our seasons do things on their own timeline. True fall color in North Texas typically starts appearing in mid to late October and can stretch into mid-November. Before that, the trees are often still fairly green and the temperatures can still be warm. After that, the leaves tend to drop quickly once they turn.
That said, the golden light of fall, that warm, low, gorgeous late-afternoon glow, arrives earlier than the foliage does. Even in early October, the quality of light in the late afternoon is absolutely stunning. So depending on the look you are going for, early October can be a beautiful option even without peak fall color.
My recommendation for most families who want that classic, warm, golden-toned fall look: aim for late October through early November. That tends to be the sweet spot for both the light and the leaves in our area.

Fall is the busiest season in photography, and spots fill up well in advance. If you are hoping for a specific date or time of day, getting on the waitlist or booking early is genuinely important.
I typically open fall session booking in the summer specifically so families have time to plan and so that I can offer the best selection of dates and times. Waiting until September or October to start looking almost always means fewer options and more competition for the dates that work best.
If you are not quite ready to book but you know you want fall photos, joining the waitlist is the best thing you can do. That way, you get first access when spots open.

Outdoor sessions in Dallas come with one unavoidable variable: Texas weather. And while we get a lot of beautiful fall days, we also get rain, unexpected wind, and the occasional day where it is somehow still 90 degrees in October. It happens.
That is why every outdoor fall session includes a backup date.
Here is how it works: when you book your session, you will receive a primary session date and a designated backup date. If the weather on your scheduled day is not suitable for photos, whether that is rain, storms, or conditions that would significantly affect the quality of your images, we will move to your backup date instead.
I typically make the call on weather by early morning on your session day so you have as much notice as possible. Your backup date will be communicated to you at or before the time of booking, and it works exactly the same way as your primary date.
A few things to keep in mind: the backup date applies to genuine weather issues. If it is simply cloudy or slightly overcast, we will typically still shoot because those conditions can actually produce really beautiful, soft light. Overcast skies are a photographer’s secret weapon. We only move to the backup when conditions would truly compromise the session.

The Dallas area has so many beautiful outdoor locations for fall sessions. A few of my favorites for this time of year include Arbor Hills Nature Reserve in Plano, Breckenridge Park in Richardson, and Crowley Park, all of which offer lush greenery and tree coverage that catches the fall color beautifully.
For families who want a more refined or garden-style setting, the Dallas Arboretum and the Rose Garden of Farmers Branch are gorgeous options as well.
When we work together, I will help you choose the location that fits your family’s style and the look you are going for. You do not need to figure this out on your own.

Wardrobe might be the thing I get asked about most, so let me keep this simple.
Warm neutrals are your best friend in fall. Think cream, ivory, camel, and tan as your base tones. Layer in one or two richer colors like rust, burnt orange, burgundy, deep olive, or forest green and you will have a palette that looks naturally cohesive against the warm fall backdrop.
Navy is also a perennial favorite for fall sessions and photographs beautifully against golden and amber tones.
Neon or very saturated colors tend to compete with the natural tones of the landscape rather than complement them. Very matchy outfits where everyone is in the exact same piece can look a little stiff. And anything with large logos or graphics across the chest tends to pull focus away from faces.
Fall is the season for cozy layers, and layers photograph so well. Cable knit sweaters, linen, chambray, plaid flannels, denim, and suede all add visual depth and warmth to images. You do not need everyone in layers, but having a few textured pieces in the mix makes a real difference.
Dress them last. Seriously. Get everyone else ready, get in the car, and put the kids in their outfits when you arrive. It sounds small but it saves the outfit from whatever inevitably happens in the fifteen minutes before you leave the house.

A few things that make a big difference on session day:
This gives little ones a chance to explore the space a little, burn off some energy, and start feeling comfortable before the camera comes out. Kids who walk into a session curious rather than rushed tend to warm up so much faster.
Specifically for the kids, but honestly, for everyone. A small snack tucked in your bag for after the first few minutes of shooting can work wonders if energy starts to dip. Just avoid anything that will stain or require serious cleanup.
I know it feels natural to tell them to smile or look at the camera, but that pressure often results in the stiff, forced expressions everyone is trying to avoid. Let me take the lead on engaging with the kids. I will get down on their level, be silly with them, make it feel like play, and the genuine smiles will follow. Trust the process.
Not in an anxious “we have to be good” way, but in an excited, casual way. Tell them something like, “We’re going to go take some fun pictures and run around outside.” Framing it as an adventure rather than an obligation really does help.
Most families assume they need a sunset session to get great light, and while golden hour is absolutely stunning, the hour or so before that also produces beautiful, warm, soft light. This is helpful if you have younger kids who tend to be more cooperative earlier in the day.

Fall sessions fill up quickly, and I only take on a limited number of families each season so I can give each session my full attention. If you know you want photos this fall, the best thing you can do right now is join the waitlist. You will be the first to know when booking opens and will have the best pick of dates and times.
I cannot wait to photograph your family this season. Fall in Dallas is genuinely so beautiful, and getting to document these moments for your family is something I do not take lightly.
